The Hoodjer Family arrived in 1893...

Grandpa Philip Hoodjer, his 8 siblings, and parents emigrated from Forlitz - Blaukirchen, Germany.  They departed from Bremen, Germany, aboard the S.S. Dresden, shown below:




They arrived at Castle Garden in Baltimore, Maryland, on March 20, 1893.  Here is the passenger manifest:

Anje and the kids followed a little later...

Grandma Anje deWit and the three children -- Koert, Alida, and Sieberdina (Dena) -- were unable to travel at the same time as Grandpa Berend.  The story was that the money to pay for Anje and the children's passage was instead used for his sister Jantina's fare.  Apparently Jantina insisted that she be allowed to go, but had no funds for her own passage.  I would like to have been a fly on the wall the day he broke the news to Anje... yikes!  Nearly 18 months later she and the children joined him in the U.S.

They sailed on the ship pictured below, and left Rotterdam, The Netherlands, on May 1, 1909:

The S.S. Nieuw Amsterdam transported Great-Grandpa deWit from Rotterdam, The Netherlands, on November 9, 1907.  Here's a photo of it:
